As our winter coaching classes come to an end we would like to share with you our plans for summer events & training. There are a huge number of cycling events on over the summer, from Sprocket Rocket and bike week, to 2 day racing, to the Junior Tour, various sportives and leisure cycles and not to forget our regular sessions for the youth members . .

Please note that the first of Leinster Cycling Youth training days will take place on Sunday the 6th March in Moynalty, Co. Meath. UPDATED with further details..

The Orwell Youth Section is in the midst of their winter training. Here is an update of the programme of activities for the youths over the coming weeks from Stephen Ryan.

Orwell Youths staged their first Christmas Invitational in many years at Corkagh Park last Sunday. Cyclists from local clubs Bray Wheelers, Sorrento, Willow Wheelers, Inspiration Cycling Club and St. Tiernans joined our own youths for a 3 stage event.

Last Sunday, the Orwell Youths went on an away day to Lucan BMX club. It is one of a series of a trips they will be doing over the winter, introducing them to different disciplines and will include MTBing, CX, Track and Crit cycling. If anyone of you thought that BMXing was easy peasy, be warned – there is a reason they insist on full face masks.

The youths are looking forward to guest coaches Aidan Hammond and Aidan Ryan teaching sessions over the next few weeks, as well as a visit to Lucan’s BMX track. And there’s also a spin for parents – have a read below!

The underage groups are up and running a few weeks now and we are delighted to see many new faces as well as some familiar ones. Read on for reports from the first few sessions, and details of the upcoming ones!

Bray Wheelers are running a Youth Track Camp starting with accreditation this weekend, and running over the mid-term break at the end of October. It’s designed for anyone who hasn’t done the track ever before, so if you’ve thought about it, head along! Details below.

The youngsters got the jump on the adults this week when they started back for winter training in Corkagh Park as part of the newly restarted youth sessions. Read how they got on below!

On Sunday September 20th the younger cyclists in Orwell start back into their cycling sessions and they are welcoming new members with open arms. The 2 hour sessions on Sunday are open to ages 6-18, boys and girls and bikes of all shapes and sizes.

The Youth and Junior members of the club have been extremely active and successful over the last few weeks, not least on the track! Below we cover the prolific road exploits of Ciaran Keogh, Andrew Ryan, Naoise and Uisneach Sheridan, and Conor and Sean Murnane, with the latter giving us an account of his experiences at the National Youth Championships.

While the Seniors are having a very strong season our underage riders are keeping pace and very often setting the bar high early in the day.

The youth riders of Orwell have been ripping it up again, with Daisy O’Shea and Andrew Ryan in action in Bohermeen, Uisneach Sheridan competing in Wexford, and Seán Murnane taking part in another stage race in Kanturk on top of Bohermeen.

Last weekend in Drogheda, while the seniors only faced one-day races, the youth of Orwell were fighting it out in the Rás na nÓg. Promoted by Drogheda Wheelers, it’s a rare opportunity for the underage riders to experience a full-blown stage race. Orwell had a representative in each category in the shape of Seán Murnane, Uisneach Sheridan and Andrew Ryan, who was riding with the Leinster team.

A couple of great results from the younger ranks in the last few weeks – Conor Murnane earned the unplaced Junior prize in Clonard two weeks ago, followed by Ciarán Keogh’s fantastic 4ths in two rounds of the U16 MTB Blitz. Yesterday both Andrew Ryan and Sean Murnane featured in their respective races in the Des Hanlon!

The next CX date has a full set of youth races if you know anybody who’d like to take part, or perhaps you’d like to drop in on the way back from your Sunday spin to support riders – both young and old! Full details follow…

The 2014 Interclub Underage League wrapped up recently, with Orwell Youths still showing up for their first taste of racing. Late joiners included Alicia and Liam Coulcher, Evan and Luke Caddow, Max Latham, and Kevin Lahiff. They took part in one or both of the last two rounds, taking place on the tracks of Corkagh Park and Sundrive Road. Read on for all the details and results!
