Joining The Club

Welcome!

Membership of Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club is managed via our Pathways course which runs twice a year.

All new members (or returning members) must complete Pathways.

Applicants should be able to ride 60km in about 3 hours on a flat route.

In 2025, we hosted a Pathways session for experienced group cyclists in April,  and a next multi-day Pathways course is in September.   The next Pathways is expected to take place during Spring 2026.

Pathways is held in Corkagh Park (just up from the Green Isle hotel) on a dedicated cycling track completely separated from the public, so no children, dogs, traffic or any other distractions.

Cycling in groups is great fun and Pathways is our system to introduce you to safe group cycling.

Everybody attending is in the same boat as yourself, so it's your opportunity to learn new skills and meet new cycling friends!

Orwell Pathways has been developed to increase your safety while enjoying this wonderful hobby.

The course is run by two professional Cycling Ireland Level 3 coaches assisted by experienced club members. The sessions start with an equipment safety briefing, bikes, helmets etc. before participants are sorted into smaller groups to begin cycling skills exercises. The skills exercises start at slow speeds with very basic exercises such as, in-line cycling, up-and-overs, singling out, obstructions, cycling calls etc.

As the course progresses, you will be introduced to more advanced exercises like; handing off water bottles, changing your front bottle to the back holder, close proximity riding, cornering and gear selection (no, not that type of gear – the ones on your bike!) All this is performed with great friendliness and fun. It is amazing and very rewarding to see participant skills and confidence grow during Pathways. This also applies to riders who are experienced in other cycling disciplines such as racing, mountain biking, sportives such as the Ring of Beara, etc., but who are not familiar with group cycling.
