The second round of the National Series was the Des Hanlon Memorial in Carlow. Dry and warm, with very little wind, that didn’t mean it was wasy, with hills right from the start making the racing hard. Two very strong performances from Orwell riders left one with a series leader’s jersey ahead of the pause for the big Easter stage races.

Round one of the 2023 National Series took place on Sunday 26 March in Blarney. While there was no rain, there was enough wind to add to what was already a challenging course. Run over a tough 140km circuit, Orwell had 3 riders in the A1/A2/Junior race, while Yvonne Doran flew our colours in the 90km Women’s race. Entries are now open for the Inter Club which will be run weekly from April 12 until August 17. Get your weekly fix of racing against five other local clubs.

Orwell Juniors Patrick O’Sullivan and Killian O’Brien featured at the Boyne GP, with Yvonne Doran and Cahir O’Higgins also earning results this weekend.

Audaxers had a busy 2022. Notable highlights include… Five hardy riders finished the Kings Mountain 200 on a snowy day in February. The Orwell 200 in March had a large entry, boosted by Leonard Kaye’s “newbies”.

2022 has been a hugely successful year for our youth section. Orwell Wheelers currently have 86 youth members (26 girls and 60 boys), and the massive growth in family cycling during the Covid pandemic is clear in the large number of U8 and U10 in this mix.

The new season dawns as the various provinces have released their provisional calendars. Orwell have historically had a great turnout across all age categories and genders so would be great to keep this reputation going. From a competitive perspective, our women have stormed the cyclocross scene in recent years with Beth McClusky (2016 and 2017) and Lara Gillespie (2018 and 2019) taking the Elite Women’s National Titles.
