Rás Tailteann 2025 – Stage 4 Report
Ennis to Mountrath | 128km |
Stage 4 of the Rás Tailteann was billed as one that would shape the overall standings—and it delivered. The 128km route from Ennis to Mountrath featured undulating terrain and the feared Category 1 Wolftrap climb in the closing 15km. Riders were met with relentless rain from start to finish, making for a cold, miserable, and brutally selective day in the saddle. Despite the weather, the race exploded into action immediately. The average speed for the opening 100km was a staggering 52kmph. Unfortunately, bad luck struck once again for Luke Keaney, who suffered a front tyre blowout just 5km in—his second major mechanical of the race. After a rapid bike swap, Luke chased for 45 minutes through heavy rain and standing water but couldn't regain contact with the main field. Still, Luke showed exceptional grit and professionalism, making it home safely within the time cut. Despite the challenging conditions, Evan Keane put in a commanding performance. He launched an early attack and made it into the day’s major breakaway, spending over 30km up the road alongside strong company, including 2024 Rás winner Dom Jackson. It was a powerful and confident ride, underlining Evan’s form and ability to mix it with the best. Back in the peloton, Patrick O’Loughlin, Ronan O’Flynn, and Sean O’Kane stayed composed, riding smartly and conserving energy for the decisive final climb. Patrick produced another strong ride, descending brilliantly after the summit to finish 30th on the stage and 6th in the Irish County Rider classification. He now sits 30th on General Classification—a superb result going into the final day. Sean O’Kane put in a much-improved ride, showing strong legs and even trying some moves during the stage. Ronan O’Flynn also impressed, climbing well to maintain his position in the C2 overall standings, where he now sits 8th. Special thanks to Dick O’Brien, whose support at the summit of the Wolftrap climb provided a timely lift to the riders on one of the race’s most challenging days.Despite adverse weather, mechanical setbacks, and the unrelenting pace, Pinergy Orwell Wheelers continue to demonstrate exceptional resilience, tactical awareness, and teamwork. With one final stage remaining, the squad remains focused and motivated to close out the 2025 Rás Tailteann with a strong finish. Evan Keane’s standout ride in the breakaway was a clear display of form and confidence. His ability to animate the race in tough conditions, working alongside top-tier riders, has only strengthened his belief and will be a major asset as he heads into Stage 5. The momentum is building—and the team is ready for the last day!
