Orwell Pinergy Wheelers were proudly represented at this year’s National Road Race Championships by Evan Keane, Luke Keaney, and Adam McConnell. With all three riders coming off strong performances at the Stephen Roche GP earlier in the week, there was quiet confidence heading into Sunday’s elite men’s race.
The 94-rider field took on a fast, grippy, and deceptively hilly circuit. With the country’s best on the start line, the pace was full gas from the gun. All three Orwell riders held their own well through the opening phase, but it quickly turned into a day of attrition.
Unfortunately, Luke suffered an asthma attack after about an hour of racing and had to withdraw. Adam and Evan continued to fight to stay in contact with the main group, but as the race intensified, they were eventually distanced — a common fate for many in what was one of the most demanding editions of the championship.
While the result may not have matched the riders’ ambitions, each of them can take pride in lining up and battling it out at the very top level of Irish road racing. There are always valuable lessons and experience to take from racing at this standard, and the club is proud of their efforts.
Massive thank you to Ivan and Grainne for their help in the team car on the day and to the family members who gave out bottles also.
A special mention goes to Adam McConnell, who is stepping back from competitive cycling for a couple of years as he embarks on a completely different adventure. Adam has given so much to Orwell on and off the bike, and we wish him the very best with what’s ahead. He leaves racing — for now — with the respect and admiration of the entire club.
