Appleby Orwell Women’s League Round 5: The Washout

Round 5 of the Appleby Orwell Women’s League was supposed to take place in the glorious sunshine of Mondello…….

But May in Ireland had other ideas! Despite our crossed fingers, the putting out of the child of Prague and constant watching of weather apps/rainfall radars luck wasnt with us this time and racing was cancelled on the night.  Read on for league standings now..

Round 5 of the Appleby Orwell Women’s League was supposed to take place in the glorious sunshine of Mondello but May in Ireland had other ideas. Despite our crossed fingers, the putting out of the child of Prague and constant watching of weather apps/rainfall radars luck wasnt with us this time and racing was cancelled on the night.

It was still sunny when Race Director, Orla Hendron did her pre race inspection of the track. All still looked ok while some riders got their warm up laps in but not long after 7 the rain rolled in.  A decision was made to shelter and the final call would be announced at 7.20 with the hope that it would blow over. Unfortunately the heavy downpour and standing water on the track meant the only sensible decision was to cancel racing.

Each person who showed up to race was awarded 1 point for the league table.

Thanks to Brian Hammond & Leinster Cycling for arranging the use of Mondello for us – hopefully next year!

LEAGUE STANDINGS:

A Race:

With only 1 race to go Annalise Murphy has the A league wrapped up and can not be beaten. However it is very close for second and third between Emma Smith, Jennifer Bates and Ellen Murray. With 11 points on offer for first place in the final TT even Linda, Autumn and Cleo could be in with a shout!

B Race:

It is a much tighter affair in the B Race! Muirna Twomey and Marijke Beltman, both from Orwell, are level on 27 points. Not far off the lead is Hannah Gibney on 21 points – all to play for next week. Hannah had the second fastest B time in the round 1 TT – can she reproduce the form and gain on the leaders?
