Four of Orwell’s youngest members were out last night to fight for victory in the opening round of the Underage Interclub League – Killian O’Brien, Alice O’Brien, Andrew Ryan and Uisneach Sheridan. Read on to see how they got on!

At last we come to the catch-up on the open action! Ciara Kinch’s win in the women’s race at Moynalty was the only result of note on the road that weekend, but last weekend we had a host of Orwell placings, including Rachael Kaye-Mellor’s First Woman prize at Sorrento’s 10TT, and Keith Harte’s 3rd in A4 in the Seamus Kennedy Memorial, prompting his upgrade to A3. Monica Marconi also netted 3rd for the women on the day, with Tom Blennerhassett taking home an unplaced A2 prize.

And while the vets are going through a strong streak, the women are not to be dismissed! Corkagh Park has been the scene of many an Orwell triumph, and recently it was the turn of Helen Horan to take silver, and the following week Aideen Keenan celebrated her first win of the series.

Last week we had two wins from two breakaways, as Pat O’Brien showed just why he’s top of the league at the moment, then leaving his rivals Barry Dace and Jamie Busher behind. Graham Scanlon and Keith Harte did the same to the rest of Limit and Semi-limit, with the former coming out on top for a fine win.

With the Marmotte recently passed, and L’Étape just gone by, we’ve dug this one out of the archives – Stephen McNally’s diary of an epic week of cycling in the French alps with Stephen Surdival and Dave McLoughlin which culminated in a very successful assault by the Stephens on the 2007 edition of the fabled Marmotte sportive, rated by many as the toughest of them all. Sinéad Kennedy was one of the select Orwell crew who travelled to France to face the intimidating Marmotte, and inspired by a giant tortoise, she faced the challenge with heart and strength! Read on for all the details!

An early evening deluge cleared for a perfect night’s testing, as Dick O’Brien sealed another club championship in the face of stiff competition from Brian McArdle. Aideen Keenan took top honours for the women, while Sean Murnane and Naoise Sheridan set records for their categories. Update: now with photo link.

We’ve a lot to catch up on from the last two weeks (hey, even the PRO deserves a holiday!), and we’ll start with the most recent result in the vets, which saw Eddie Lynch victorious in the IVCA Championship last Sunday. There were also wins for Paul Tansey and William Parnell, and placings for Barry Dace, Ciara Kinch and Romano Morelli – read on to find out all about them!

Before the heavyweights of the Marmotte share their war stories, here’s a warm-up piece from Brian McArdle on his first taste of the Ring of Kerry experience.

Last weeks league crit saw a repeat win for Conor Murnane, and Liam Rowsome taking a maiden triumph from a break, while the weekend was packed with results – Barry Dace winning in the vets, Neal Hudson taking silver on the road, and Orla Hendron an actual silver on the track. Fionn Sheridan also won bronze, and Ciara Kinch placed in the National League race.

The May bank holiday weekend saw another very successful running of the Orwell Randonnée, and once more members of the organising committee met recent with our chosen charity, the Ross Nugent Foundation, to present the proceeds.

It was a week for the testers, as the Club 10TT Champs clashed with the Nationals, with some outstanding results in both – Dick O’Brien dominating the former, and Claire McEntee setting a blistering time in the latter. Corkagh Park saw first a Horan haul, then an Orwell clean sweep, while three of the men completed the National Road Race Champs on Sunday.

A weekend with something for everybody in it. A very large contingent turned out to support the Joe Daly Memorial Cycle in aid of Simpsons hospital while others opted to test themselves against the Dragon in Enniscorthy and yet others still haven’t had enough of the Wicklow Peaks.

The summer Underage Interclub League 2014 is happening soon! Beginning on the 21st July, the league will run all the way through August on Mondays and one Sunday, full details below! Update 2: Reminder of the details of the final round, and the prize-giving!
