As a thank you to those who tolerate our time-consuming cycling hobby, Orwell are hosting a family barbecue over the August bank holiday!

Eric Downey showed that his form hasn’t dipped much since his 2013 overall league win, while Valdis Andersons got the victory that has eluded him since he was upgraded to Scratch that same season after running riot in Corkagh Park.

James O’Callaghan took a spin down to the Sierra Nevada to take on Europe’s highest paved road in extreme heat. To put you in the mood ahead of the Marmotte, have a read!

A first for the Roche GP, the inaugural edition of the Lisney Orwell Wheelers Women’s GP was won in style by National Champ Fiona Meade. womenscycling.ie reports below!

The Sundrive Summer Track League finished up recently, and our own Andrew Ryan, Uisneach Sheridan and David Swift all picked up silverware in the final standings. Orwell also finished 2nd in the club standings – details below!

The 2015 edition of the Stephen Roche GP saw Fiona Meade and Jake Gray take the senior races, with victories in the youth races for Lucy O’Donnell, Will Ryan and Liam Curley.

Eamonn Eaton and a merry band of Orwells braved the conditions of the first ever Giro d’Italia Gran Fondo, and wrote a short and sweet account of the day. Updated with extra that never made it to the first draft!

40 riders signed on in Roundwood on Saturday morning to give their all in the Noel and Kieran Hammond Memorial time trial. With plenty of prizes on offer, competition was tight, but defending champion Ian Richardson took the overall from Sean McKenna with 22″ to spare. Conor Murnane walked away with the Kieran Hammond trophy, awarded this year to the top Junior.

Coming in at under 2,000 words, this is one of Billy Parker’s shorter novellas, but a worthy read nonetheless! He takes us through his multi-faceted Orwell experience of this year’s Wicklow 200. Accompanying his written account is Eileen Byne’s wonderful video composition. Have a read and a watch!

The last two rounds of the club league had a eerily familiar feel to them, with Brian McArdle taking a fine solo win at Mondello last week, and Dick O’Brien and Aideen Keenan demolishing their respective fields in the 10TT Championships last night. Conor Murnane was also crowned Junior 10TT Champion – the first time that title has been awarded in a quarter-century.

While the Seniors are having a very strong season our underage riders are keeping pace and very often setting the bar high early in the day.

The Orwell trackies of Daniel McElroy, David Swift and Conor Murnane were out in Sundrive competing in the Duane Delaney Memorial on Saturday, but it was Seán Murnane who took the overall honours! He shares his experience of the day below, with a few additions from McElroy.

With racing in Roundwood and Newbridge at the weekend, Orwell were as active as ever, with podium finishes for Jules De Meester and Stephen Rowan, placings for Ken O’Neill, Richard Cattle and Scott Gilchrist, as well as prizes for Bryan Geary and Sandra Telford.
