First time joiners to Scott-Orwell Wheelers should have a read of the below about joining the club for 2019.

Ciara Ni Fhlathartaigh and Breda Horan are two Rás na mBan Rookies who are sharing a room this week. They have taken the time to compile a race diary for us! The final few days have now been added – an epic read for an epic race.

Scott Orwell Wheelers is celebrating a BIG birthday this year!!!! The club will be 70 years old this year and to celebrate we will be holding a Gala Dinner on the 20th of October. Tickets are now available to buy.

Rás na mBan 2018 starts this Wednesday with a top class field of domestic and International cyclists. Scott Orwell Wheelers is continuing a proud tradition of entering a team in this grueling race. In the lead up to the event we are doing a series of profiles on the riders and support team. Read on to learn a little more about all our racers!

Scott Orwell Wheelers sensation Lara Gillespie has added a gold medal to the silver won on Thursday at the European Junior Track Championships in Aigle, Switzerland!

“This time last year I was in A4 travelling south hunting for points in Charleville. Fast forward 11 months I needed a first or second place to move up to A2. After a recent crash and loss of form the season wasn’t going so well. A lot depended on Kilmallock and the last couple of races”. An epic read from Cahir O’Higgins on his recent win in Limerick – enjoy the ride!

What a weekend that was! Loads happening – we take in the Club Hill Climb Champs, the BAR, The National Youth & Track Championships and a race report from the Leinster Autumn Classic by Eoin Ahern. A write up on the Cal McCarthy Cup by Cahir O’Higgins follows as a separate article. Enjoy!

The Errigal International Youth Tour is one of the biggest events on the youth calendar. It’s a tough 3 days with 4 stages, including a TT, two road races and criterium with some very testing climbs! Scott Orwell Wheelers was well represented at the race and huge thanks to the Under 11/12 Boys team for putting together a race report for us….

The season may be slowly coming to an end but there was still plenty of quality racing last weekend! The youths battled it out for the Leinster Road titles, National Championships on the track, the second last round of the National Points series and the Collins Christie Memorial in Navan. And of course not forgetting the battle of the teams for Team Time Trial glory in the club league!

4am, 175km in: At the one-stop, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it village of Kilmacow, searching for our rest stop. No signs of light or life. Then suddenly, an inebriated madman standing in the middle of the road waving his arms wildly. Oh wait, that’s Leonard, standing there since who knows when, to make sure we don’t get lost. Serves him right for putting us up to this in the first place!

The weekend saw two upgrades in the club – Eoin Byrne to A1 and Anthony Mulholland to A2, the youths were off road at the Cross Country mtb National Champs, the Vets were in Monesterevin and all while Dave Mc was racing around in circles at the 24hour TT in Athy!

The National 400 & 600 Audax events will take place on the weekend of the 4th of August. For full information on the events and how to enter read on…

Never one to shy from a challenge, Sinead Kennedy and Michael Staines headed off to France a few weeks ago to conquer The Bald Giant – Mount Ventoux – from all three sides in one day. It’s definitely a bucket list event! Find out how they got on….

Another busy weekend of racing but particularly for our youths who had the National Youth Track Champs on Saturday and the Mullingar GP on Sunday! The National Road Series moved to Mullingar on Sunday and we had a first in A2 and a 2nd in the Women’s race. Catch up on all the news here….

It’s slightly unfortunate that the name has a slightly comical edge to it, because the Bogman 2-Day is definitely no joke! Not only is this one of the best stage races that I’ve taken part in this year due to the quality of the field, but every aspect of the race was first class. Definitely more top-man than bog-man. Michael Hanley heads west and lives to tell the tale!
