Weekend Race Report: Tour of the Mournes / Tommy Brady Memorial / PJ O’Riordan.
It was another action-packed weekend for Orwell Wheelers, with riders lining up across the country and putting in top-class efforts.
Saturday – Tommy Brady Memorial, Co. Meath
Kieran Keegan continued his strong debut season with a solid performance on a fast, aggressive circuit. Despite tough conditions and a hard pace, Kieran stayed composed and finished safely in the bunch — a great result as he continues to gain experience and confidence in open racing.
Sunday – PJ O’Riordan Memorial (National Road Series), Co. Limerick
Josh Francis and Matt Lynch represented the club in the latest round of the National Road Series. Competing at the C3 level, both riders continue to show excellent progression.
Matt Lynch finished 15th, adding more valuable points to his name.
Josh Francis crossed the line in 23rd after a hard-fought race.
Although they missed the winning break, both riders put in strong performances and continue to build momentum.
Sunday – Tour of the Mournes, Co. Down
The highlight of the weekend came from the north, where Newry CC hosted the renowned Tour of the Mournes — one of the marquee events on the Irish calendar.
Joe-Nathan Mater was in attacking mode from the start, making the day’s main breakaway and riding aggressively throughout. The move was eventually reeled in, and Joe-Nathan finished a commendable 18th after an exhausting effort.
Sean O’Kane had a breakthrough ride. After surviving the key selection over the infamous Wall, he made a decisive late move and held strong to finish in 5th place — his first-ever result in the C1 category. A massive performance that bodes well ahead of the Rás Tailteann this week.
Looking Ahead-
With riders showing great form and results building across all levels, the club is in strong shape heading into the summer.
All focus now turns to the Rás, where Orwell Wheelers will once again be proudly represented.
