The summer Underage Interclub League 2015 is happening soon! Beginning on the 20th July, the league will run all the way through August on Mondays and one Sunday, full details below!

Twenty six Orwells were out on the circuits last weekend, to the South for Míle Fáilte, to the West for Tour de Burren, to the North for Swords McNally CC sportive and to the East for L’Eroica Britannia. The Stephen Roche GP treated onlookers to some spectacular entertainment last night, with family-friendly novice races, a set of youth races, and the headline event being shaped by several moves before James Davenport (SDCC) jumped well clear to take a superb win, all in the company of the man himself, Stephen Roche.

We’ve a pile of racing to catch up on apart from the Roche GP, with the Sallygap race being won by Séamus Nolan, the vets getting a slew of results including 2nd in the As for Barry Dace, and the Sheridans flooding the track league final overall.

The Joe Daly Memorial Charity Cycle Rally will be held on Sunday 29th June. Proceeds in aid of Simpson’s Hospital.

Jamie Busher and David Bradley completed Granfondo Milan San Remo on June 8th, following the same route as the Classic itself. They’ve written two great accounts for us, and there’s a video as well!

On Sunday June 8th 2014 under overcast and threatening skies 79 Orwells, 2 support crew and 1 sticky bottle began assembling from 6.30a.m. for the Wicklow 100 and 200 events – truly one of the iconic events on the leisure rider’s calendar. They aimed to complete in times from 5 hours (for the 100) to 11 hours (for the 200).

Instead of awarding the traditional club trophies at the Christmas party, this year we’re giving things a more formal tone, and will host a separate prize-giving for all sections on Saturday 27th September.

Orwell Wheelers are once more gearing up for the promotion of Ireland’s top annual criterium, the Stephen Roche Grand Prix on Wednesday 25th June at Meadowmount, Ballinteer, Co Dublin. Update: Stephen Roche himself will be on hand this year, and we’ve added the prize list below!

A weekend’s worth of racing in Roundwood paid dividends for Fionn Sheridan, taking two prizes, including the coveted Kieran Hammond trophy. Keith Harte and David Maher placed in the Roundwood GP, while several members scored results in the Hammond Memorial TT event. And last week in the league, Uisneach Sheridan, Paul Tansey and Brian Ahern won the sprints in Corkagh Park.

Ian Richardson takes the overall and Noel Hammond trophy from UCD clubmate Greg Swinand, while Orwell’s Fionn Sheridan goes home with Kieran Hammond trophy.

We’ve been remiss in our racing coverage, with the women in particular scoring a number of fine results – Sandra Telford with a Corkagh Park win, and Ciara Kinch 4th in the Meath GP. Read on for much, much more!

Thirty-seven people braved the Adare tailbacks, hit the better roads of Healy-Rae country, took over the Tralee town centre apartments and embarked on what in the cold light of day was utter madness. Three days of back to back sportives in the mountains of Kerry. Most of us had never done something like this before. Here are some of the survivors’ stories…

Orwell’s John McElligott is organising a challenging 200km with a significant amount of climbing and descending on some of the quietest and most spectacular roads that Kerry has to offer.

A month ago today, the Giro d’Italia came to Ireland, with the Grande Partenza taking place in Belfast, and a sprint finish in Dublin. Orwell were all over the race, and we’ve included three tales below – thanks to Aideen Collard, Ivan O’Brien, and Brian McArdle.

Next Sunday sees the club’s first open racing event of the year, the Noel and Kieran Hammond Memorials, run as a TT for the second time in succession.

Not long after the Giro bunch passed over the Stelvio, Orwell’s David Fitzgerald tackled it too! The Passo dello Stelvio features endless switchbacks of suffering, and Dave takes us through it all below!

The June bank holiday marks the first long weekend of the summer, and this year marked the first edition of the Deenside Cup in Kilkenny. Ciara Kinch, Aideen Keenan, Rachael Kaye-Mellor and Bryan Geary all came away with prizes, while in the north-west of the country, an Orwell contingent was ripping up Glengesh, with a star turn from newly minted sprinter Fionn Sheridan.

The first full handicap of the league saw Scratch dominate the placings despite a concerted Limit effort to stay away, with Brian Ahern taking the win from Patrick O’Brien.
