It’s not every day a club member wears the leader’s jersey at a major stage race! The story of a great weekend’s racing for Orwell in Newry and at the Donore races.

Some super performances from the men and women, boys and girls of Orwell Wheelers over the weekend: between road racing, cross country mountain biking and paracycling. Well done all!

Great results for Orwell keep coming in! This week it was time for the National Series round 5 in Currow, Co Kerry (130km in 22 degree heat), and the Bob Crilly Classic near Belfast.

From kids (and adults!) in Limerick to mountain biking in Killarney and the fourth round of the National Series in Navan, it was a huge weekend for Orwell Wheelers racers.

With 4 stages over three days in the wilds of North Cork, the Kanturk 3 Day is one of the leading stage races for A2 and A3 riders in Ireland. The Orwell team of three juniors (Joe-Nathan Matar, David Harrington and Killian O’Brien) and one seasoned … non-junior (Cahir O’Higgins) had a roller-coaster ride.

Some very strong Orwell performances and lots of learning at the Gorey Three Day this weekend, and lots of experience gained by our (mainly) young squad. With four stages over three days and almost 150 riders, Gorey is a fantastic stage race for A2, A3 and Junior riders, as well as having a strong ladies field.

The second round of the National Series was the Des Hanlon Memorial in Carlow. Dry and warm, with very little wind, that didn’t mean it was wasy, with hills right from the start making the racing hard. Two very strong performances from Orwell riders left one with a series leader’s jersey ahead of the pause for the big Easter stage races.

Round one of the 2023 National Series took place on Sunday 26 March in Blarney. While there was no rain, there was enough wind to add to what was already a challenging course. Run over a tough 140km circuit, Orwell had 3 riders in the A1/A2/Junior race, while Yvonne Doran flew our colours in the 90km Women’s race. Orwell Juniors Patrick O’Sullivan and Killian O’Brien featured at the Boyne GP, with Yvonne Doran and Cahir O’Higgins also earning results this weekend.

Orwell’s Yvonne Doran, Ronan Grimes, and Patrick O’Sullivan bagged results at Sunday’s Newbridge Grand Prix in a tough afternoon of racing.

Killian O’Brien and Yvonne Doran started their seasons in style, netting results in the season’s first weekend of racing.

A fantastic evening for Orwell Wheelers at the Leinster Hillclimb Championship — three golds and a silver for the club on the night.

2019 is going to be another busy year for the Scott Orwell Racers and organizers! Put these dates in your diary now – for racing, marshaling or spectating. All are guaranteed to be epic!

“This time last year I was in A4 travelling south hunting for points in Charleville. Fast forward 11 months I needed a first or second place to move up to A2. After a recent crash and loss of form the season wasn’t going so well. A lot depended on Kilmallock and the last couple of races”. It’s slightly unfortunate that the name has a slightly comical edge to it, because the Bogman 2-Day is definitely no joke! Not only is this one of the best stage races that I’ve taken part in this year due to the quality of the field, but every aspect of the race was first class. Definitely more top-man than bog-man. Gaelforce West is a race that most people have heard about, and represents the “Old Lady” of Adventure Racing in Ireland. It’s a 6 Stage Point-To-Point race starting in the stunning Killary Fjord in Galway. This year Luke McMullan took on the challenge and came away smiling! Last weekend a hardy bunch of 8 Scott Orwell Wheelers headed West to the National Championship Races in Sligo. We managed to convince (cajole) a few of them into writing a report from each of their perspectives. It makes for great reading! Well done and thanks to all
