It’s finally here! It’s Paris-Brest-Paris week and on Sunday the 18th of August 13 Scott Orwell Wheelers will line up in Paris to start the 1,250km challenge that they have been working towards for the past 2 years. This is the first of a two part look at the who is taking on the challenge and why! Andrew Potts put some questions to the group – the first 6 answer here…

In the build up to PBP, we asked the Scott Orwell Wheeler Participants to tell us a little about themselves and their road to Paris. Our hard working Leisure Rep, Leonard Kaye, who does everything 110% got a little carried away and wrote enough for this excellent insight into his path to cycling, Orwell & his successful Paris-Brest-Paris adventure…..

Step 1: Do one 400 Brevet In 2018 which will almost guarantee a pre-registration place, Step 2: Complete a series of Brevet’s in the first 6 months of 2019, a 200, 300, 400 and 600 and you get a start place. It’s easy you only need to ride 1900 kilometres in 18 months and you are on the start line.

The Eoin McLove crosses Ireland – you leave Whitehall, head to Lucan and use secondary roads to Athy, on to Templemore, Nenagh, Portumna, Drumshanbo, Belturbut, Ballybay, Virginia, Kells, Kilmessin and back to the car park in Whitehall. Seriously you would not drive it! So, 40 odd people, ten from Orwell set off in good spirits on a nice enough morning.

A collective madness of randonneurs and the communities along the route that support them on their journey. What else but madness could describe 6000 cyclists all who must qualify by riding 200, 300, 400- and 600-kilometre Brevet events just to get to the start line. At 19-00 planning became a reality as we started off on our journey, suggested breaks and food stops all penciled in along the way. Nice sunny evening, good temperatures and no rain. The Midlands 300 will take place on Sunday the 31st of March and is the second of 3 Audax events which will be hosted by Scott Orwell Wheelers in 2019. This event is a great stepping stone for anyone thinking of trying a longer Audax after a 200km, the experienced or those starting on the road to PBP qualification.

James O’Callaghan is a veteran of many long and testing cycles – audaxes, Marmottes and countless others but this summer he took on his biggest challenge to date in the form of the Mile Failte 1,200. Thanks to James for taking time to send a write up on the event and the preparation that went into it. We cant wait to see what he has lined up for 2019;)

4am, 175km in: At the one-stop, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it village of Kilmacow, searching for our rest stop. No signs of light or life. Then suddenly, an inebriated madman standing in the middle of the road waving his arms wildly. Oh wait, that’s Leonard, standing there since who knows when, to make sure we don’t get lost. Serves him right for putting us up to this in the first place!

The World of the Audax is long distance cycling, the events go all year round and start at 200K. It is very much taking part rather than how quick, nobody really cares how long you took or how fast you might have gone. It is about the journey or completing the journey. The Audax is also about touring, cycling to places you have never been, the route little more than an excuse to cycle a long way.

Last Summer, Joe did the 180km version of the Giants Causeway Sportive. But he missed the cutoff time to finish over Torr Head. As a result, Torr Head was a bit of “unfinished business”. The Titanic Torr event this April seemed like an ideal solution – a 200km Audax, starting from Belfast, with Torr Head at about 95km.

Scott-Orwell Wheelers are proud to announce two upcoming audax events; the Midlands 300 and the National 400. These follow on from March’s Orwell 200 Audax.
