Round up of recent activity of Orwell Youths

Stephen Ryan gives a round up of recent activity with the Orwell youths

Round up of recent activity

Monday night racing had a big crowd @ Corkagh last night. Overall winners on the night were RonanF [U12/14/16] and Darragh Saunders (Team Giant Dublin) [U10]. Ruairi, Andrew and Tadhg also went home with their pockets bulging. Full results here Monday Night Youth Racing is Back On. In the U12/14/16 skills competition, sisters Aoife and Ella Murtagh from Lucan made it through to the final with older sister Aoife winning the bragging rights.

On Sunday Roisin O’Sullivan took part in the An Post Heritage Cycle tour of Meath – Roisin has been a regular helper at events like the Orwell Randonnee and National Championships. T’was a wet day in Meath but reports say everyone had a great time.

Elsewhere in Meath on Sunday, Ruairi, Andrew, RonanF and Lara took part in the Brendan Campbell Memorial races hosted by Drogheda Wheelers and all acquitted themselves proudly. Lara, following on from her recent MTB CX and Track exploits continued the good form and picked up 3rd in the U14’s a whisker behind the a very strong top 2. Andrew was next across the line in 4th and in the U16’s RonanF came 5th having jumped a little early for his sprint – the other 4 more experienced racers were quite happy to sit on wheels until the final 100m when they powered by.

A few weeks back while I was away one of our youths alumni raced in the national Junior Tour in the Orwell colours. 1st year Junior Sean Murnane put in a great performance with the best of local and international riders during the week-long 8 stage event run in Clare. Fellow youths alumni, 2nd year Junior Luke Keating provided mechanical support for the week – his Leaving cert having got in the way of preparations for racing – and Rachel Glendon was the brilliant team manager. Well done to all of them.

There are a few upcoming events to note before we take a break at the end of the summer:

Every Monday (including this bank holiday) – racing @ Corkagh Park. Sign on from 6. 30. First race at 7.

Also this weekend the Errigal 3 day is on Errigal Youth Tour up in Donegal. Afaik, Lara, RonanF, RonanO and Lorcan are all entered. Best of luck to you all.

The following week on Sunday September 7th the Leinster Road Championships are on in Kilmessan. As we get more info we will let you know but in the meantime feel free to search for “Collins Christie Memorial 2016.” Anybody who has raced this year should put it in the diary.

If you can’t make Kilmessan you might consider joining into a Youth team for the Team Time Trial which is being run as part of the adults club league on Thursday the 4th. Please contact DaveMc if interested.

The National Youth Champs are on in Kanturk the weekend of August 20th.

Sunday spins are on most weekends, leaving JoeD’s @ 10:00 – watch out for Jens text for confirmation each week.

There are no formal youth activities during September but there is always plenty going on in the club that may be of interest so do keep an eye on the forum and web pages.

As always please feel free to contact myself, Dave or Jen if you have any questions or comments on any youth cycling activities. All the best, Stephen
