Yvonne Doran Does the Double
Orwell Wheelers’ Yvonne Doran once again stamped her authority on the national stage, claiming the Masters 40 Irish Road Race title at the National Masters Road Race Championships in Co. Monaghan.
The opening laps saw the peloton steadily reduced as the pace and testing circuit took its toll. The decisive move came midway through the final lap when a two-rider breakaway went clear, featuring Doran and Breda Murphy (Carlow RCC).
Working well together, the pair quickly built a decisive gap on the chasers, knowing the medals would be decided between them. In the sprint for the line, Doran proved strongest, outpacing Murphy to take gold and secure her second national title, completing an incredible championship double.
There was also a fine showing from Orla Hendron, who rode strongly throughout and added further to Orwell’s presence on a landmark day for the club.
In the M50 Men’s race, Diarmuid Collins gave everything on the day. Coming into the championships on the back of some excellent wins, confidence was high and the legs were strong. However, he was unfortunate to miss the crucial break. While the result wasn’t what he had hoped for, his commitment and effort were outstanding, and the club is extremely proud of his performance.
Ronan Flynn also represented the club impressively, riding strongly and showcasing the depth of talent across Orwel Wheelers.
