The Leisure Group continue building up to the season, and will host an evening on ‘Group Training for Sportives’ in Milltown on Monday 27th next, presented by John Lanigan, John Twomey and Denis Gleeson.

This is intended for and aimed at people who want to attain two specific levels of cycling activity and are prepared to commit to doing it as part of a group of likeminded cyclists.

The two levels are: (1) People who want to be in a position to comfortably do the Wicklow 100 (or similar length rides) by the end of May (led by Denis Gleeson, assisted by John Twomey). (2) People who want to be in a position to comfortably do the Wicklow 200 (or similar events on around that time such as Mick Byrne 160/200, TKAS 3 days * 160) by the end of May (led by John Lanigan, assisted by John Twomey).

The evening will consist of a run-through of what the Groups will cover over the next few months, so that people understand what they are signing up for. These sessions are really on the road sessions with an outline training plan that people can follow, rather than a classroom session.

Topics covered will include:

  • The format for the spins (some guided by John, John and Denis but others are self-guided – particularly for the W200 group)

  • The range of distances and terrain we will cover and the minimum level of ability needed to join the W200 group – most people should be capable to join in the W100 group

  • Any Sportives we may ride as part of the training

  • Brief summary of what the training plan will cover

  • Recovery weeks

  • Climbing techniques

  • Descending

  • Eating & Drinking on the bike

  • The ground rules – Do’s and don’ts for the groups!

  • Clarity on what Denis, John and John will and won’t do for the groups

These will be no charge for these sessions, but as your fellow members are giving their time, we do ask that you come prepared to commit to the programme and the ideas behind it. We’ll see you at the Jesuit Conference Centre, Milltown, at 19.15!
