Vignettes from PBP
In Villaines, the whole population is in the streets. “Huh, there seems to be a festival going on.” “YOU’re the festival, bozo!” I park the bike and run up the steps to get my card stamped. The crowd cheers and parts in front of me, the brevet card in my hand become the Olympic torch, carried across continents to the controller’s rubber stamp. Thanks to Kashif for these wonderful memories of PBP 2019

Andrew’s PBP
“It was really tough, I have never, ever gotten as close to the physical and mental anguish I endured over the few days. I think we all had our difficult moments and somehow, we all dragged ourselves through them. My emotions shifted from despair to exaltation and I was continually humbled by the support along the way.” The final part of Andrew Potts PBP series is the big one – the story of the event itself and how it unfolded for Andrew. It’s a tale worth reading!

Beyond here be Dragons: My Road To Paris.
In the build up to PBP, we asked the Scott Orwell Wheeler Participants to tell us a little about themselves and their road to Paris. Our hard working Leisure Rep, Leonard Kaye, who does everything 110% got a little carried away and wrote enough for this excellent insight into his path to cycling, Orwell & his successful Paris-Brest-Paris adventure…..

Qualifying for PBP 2019 and the Spirit of The Randonneur
Step 1: Do one 400 Brevet In 2018 which will almost guarantee a pre-registration place,
Step 2: Complete a series of Brevet’s in the first 6 months of 2019, a 200, 300, 400 and 600 and you get a start place.
It’s easy you only need to ride 1900 kilometres in 18 months and you are on the start line.

Eoin McLove 600
The Eoin McLove crosses Ireland – you leave Whitehall, head to Lucan and use secondary roads to Athy, on to Templemore, Nenagh, Portumna, Drumshanbo, Belturbut, Ballybay, Virginia, Kells, Kilmessin and back to the car park in Whitehall. Seriously you would not drive it! So, 40 odd people, ten from Orwell set off in good spirits on a nice enough morning.

PBP: 1891 to 2019, History Culture Passion.
A collective madness of randonneurs and the communities along the route that support them on their journey. What else but madness could describe 6000 cyclists all who must qualify by riding 200, 300, 400- and 600-kilometre Brevet events just to get to the start line. Or for a 100 years whole communities, towns, villages and generations of families, set up sleep, food, coffee and water stops often for free to help this long chain of riders reach Paris? Why do the cyclists and

The National 400 – A journey through the night.
4am, 175km in: At the one-stop, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it village of Kilmacow, searching for our rest stop. No signs of light or life. Then suddenly, an inebriated madman standing in the middle of the road waving his arms wildly. Oh wait, that’s Leonard, standing there since who knows when, to make sure we don’t get lost. Serves him right for putting us up to this in the first place!

Audax and the RRTY
The World of the Audax is long distance cycling, the events go all year round and start at 200K. It is very much taking part rather than how quick, nobody really cares how long you took or how fast you might have gone. It is about the journey or completing the journey.
The Audax is also about touring, cycling to places you have never been, the route little more than an excuse to cycle a long way.
