Sometimes among all the reports of popping champagne corks on the top step of the podium, it’s easy to forget that races contain many other stories – stories of tenacity, teamwork, comradery…. and sometimes just good old fashioned hilarity!

Orla Montague of Dublin Wheelers capped an effervescent display by taking the win in the A race in Round 3 of the Orwell Women’s Crit League, while the B race saw Scott-Orwell’s Muirna Walsh take the win in a storming sprint finish.

The very popular Women’s Beginner Crit League promoted by Scott Orwell Wheelers had it’s second outing of 2016 in Corcaigh Park last night. Sophie Loscher made an impressive début in the B race, while the evergreen Orla Hendron took the win in the As.

The 2016 Orwell Wheelers’ Women’s Crit Series starts with a time trial on Tuesday April 5th at Black Bull, Co Meath. The six race series will follow the same format as recent years, with the time trial to be followed by three rounds of Tuesday night racing at Corkagh Park and a road race in Brittas. The sixth and final round of the league will be another time trial in Black Bull on the same course as round one, giving riders the opportunity to compare their performance over t

Orwell Wheelers Training Camp took place on Saturday January 23rd. The group of twenty Orwell Wheelers alongside organisers Stephen O’Shea and Ann Horan with coaches Fiona Meade and Orla Hendron took off from Dundrum at 9am cycling to Bunclody via Blessington and Baltinglass.

It’s been a couple of months since the apex of the women’s road racing, An Post Rás na mBan came and went in a flurry of activity and it’s a good time to reflect on a couple of typically dogged and superbly athletic performances from two of the club’s most talented vets.

In the last few weeks we’ve had two rounds of the Joe Daly Cycles National League, and three rounds of the Orwell StickyBottle.com Crit League. Orwell have been active throughout – with placers including Mary Brady, Orla Hendron, Ann Horan, Breda Horan, Monica Marconi, Aishling O’Connor and Sandra Telford. Results and race reports below!

The Orwell women sent a team of eight women to compete in the inaugural Newcastle West 2 Day stage race two weeks ago – Mary Brady, Orla Hendron, Ann Horan, Breda Horan, Helen Horan, Monica Marconi, Siobhán O’Connor and Naoise Sheridan. Along with them was Stephen Rowan in a supporting role, and together the team got through a weekend of hard racing – check out Ann Horan’s account below!

The Easter holidays must’ve provided plenty of opportunities for resting or training, as the prize winners for the women this week included two teachers and student Naoise Sheridan! From Rás an Laois to the first round of the Women’s Crit League, we’ve got it all below!

The 2015 Joe Daly Cycles National League opened in Blarney last Sunday, and Orwell took home a tremendous result – racing sophomore Ann Horan taking the bunch gallop for 2nd behind National Champion Fiona Meade. She takes us through the race below!

We’re getting close to the 2015 World Track Masters event, so the time is ripe for a trip down memory lane. At the event last year, Orla Hendron claimed another World Championship title to add to her 2010 gold, this time in the 2k Pursuit. She also earned a brace of silver medals from the Scratch and Points events. If you’ve forgotten the buzz at the time, or weren’t in the club, have a quick read below.

With today being the date of the very open Women’s Commission AGM, it seems a fitting occasion to publish this one from the drafts folder! For at least the fourth year running, Orwell fielded a strong team in the An Post Rás na mBan. With four club members in Aideen Keenan, Ciara Kinch, Ann Horan and Claire McEntee, and a guest rider Lydia Gurley, the team took home the Top Irish Team prize, 9th overall, 2nd and 3rd county riders and a combativity award! On the women’s open scene, Monica Marconi scored an emphatic victory in Wexford for the final round of the National League, while Ciara Kinch came home a fine 5th. Kinch then went on to notch up Gold in the Leinster Hill Climb Champs, with Aideen Keenan in silver a mere 7″ behind her. And Orla Hendron displayed rude form at the Track Champs to take home two national medals, while Rachel Glendon also won silver in the National Middle Distance Triathlon Champs. Update: now with

Time for a catch-up with the final rounds of Corkagh Park Ladies’ Racing, with wins by both Aideen Keenan and Orla Hendron, both heading for a late season peak, and Mary Brady taking her first prize at the head of the B group! We also say goodbye to organiser Siobhán O’Connor, as after three years she’s handing over the reins to Aideen Keenan and Lucan’s Maria Mulvany.

Aideen Keenan notched up her most dominant win yet, soloing to victory in Clonmel at the weekend, ahead of the bunch gallop, which was taken by a flying Rachael Kaye-Mellor. Keenan followed that up with a tight second in Corkagh Park, which was also the scene of Helen Horan’s début win from the B group! And last Thursday Conor Murnane pipped Arek Pierozynski for an excellent win R18 of the league on Dorey’s Forge. Some men also raced in the Suir Valley 3 Day.

Aideen Keenan and Helen Horan were on the rampage in Corkagh Park again this week, each taking the prime in their respective races, and Horan going on to another super silver, and Keenan another fine win. Click for more!

Aideen Keenan was once again on the podium in Corkagh Park, and regular placer Helen Horan matched her bronze medal, all while the pair – along with Monica Marconi – organised the races and hosted a great evening of women’s racing.
